Rectangular Safety Pin Rainbow Pendant

I’ve had some requests for Safety Pin-related jewelry, so I created a few pieces.

To represent a family unit, I wrangled four safety pins onto a fifth, separated by rainbow beads, and shaped a wire rectangle around the mobile structure. The rectangle was then embellished with a piece of hand-drawn rainbow paper that had been dipped in a beeswax and resin mixture, after which I adhered it to the wire. This piece measures 2 1/4 inches long by 1 1/2 inches wide and is about 1/2 inch deep. Encaustics should be cared for as you would for any fine art piece. Encaustic derives from the word ‘burn in’ and is a process of applying molten wax colors to a surface for the creation of images or decoration that began more than 2 millennia ago with Roman Egyptian wax portraits.
