Angel Making

It is angel making time.

No matter the season, I consistently sell angels throughout the year. So after my angel count session last week I had to replenish some more.

My purples and blues are popular. I also keep selling the skull angels I have in stock. After a 3D encaustic workshop my friend and I went to Blick’s and I found this lovely gold sugar skull paper which of course needed to be angel-fied as well. I love the result.

My aim for the Beetlejuice angel turned out to have a different effect when I went with horizontal stripes instead. Ah well, it’s cute whether you see a jail bird or Audrey or anything else in it.

I wanted to make an ugly sweater angel as well, and this one turned out to be a wine and sweets lover.

I had some Christmas carols from prior seasons that I converted into new angels as well. Some are from when I didn’t jig my angels yet, so I had to adjust the size of the bodies to fit the printed text.

Sometimes the multiple transports of the ornaments take a toll, and when this angel’s wing came loose I decided to refresh its wings entirely, while humming Mr. Mister.

Other angels got new accessories to see if that makes them more attractive to buyers.

Sometimes color decisions are difficult, so there may be multiple poinsettia angel iterations.

My friend Kaitlyn colored a bunch of scraps for me last year when rainbows were trending. I had time to incorporate those scraps into new creations this week.

The polka dots were begging for pompoms, and I am super delighted at the two pastel angels that came out of that.

Today I sent some off to local stores.

Sacred Art will be bringing a batch to Show of Hands this weekend.

My Evanston Pop Up Gallery section got a makeover today too.

The rest of inventory will be with me at the Handmade Market on Saturday, and at the Jewelry & Gift Show in Highland park next weekend.

I look forward to seeing these adopted to new homes. It is a pleasure to keep making dragonflies and angels, so I look forward to getting jigging some more after the Thanksgiving Holiday with family.

December is coming soon, and I am happy to work on commissions for your holiday needs. Contact me if you have a gift idea in mind.

Countdown to Christmas

Fair season is over for me, but shopping is still allowed in these 10 days before Christmas.

I just posted the angels and frosties I have in stock on my Facebook page. You can see individual photos of the angels here.

Contact me if you saw anything at fairs or in my booth snapshots that caught your eye. My online store will remain sparse until January, when I will have a chance to take stock and photograph the pieces to be uploaded.

I ran out of Rainbow Angels, but will be making more with new outfits my friend created, and will post those on Facebook soon.

Here’s to more ornaments hanging on other people’s trees this season.

It’s custom order time!

’Tis the season to place orders, falalalalaa-lala-lala.

My waxed ornament inventory went from this:

I am thrilled the angels and frosties are gaining popularity, but for you regulars it means that if you want to gift these to your loved ones, you need to contact me now.

I’ll be bending and waxing for Small Business Saturday before Thanksgiving.

After Turkey Fest I will be popping up at a yet-to-be announced location (you’ll like it!) along with replenishing Blue Buddha Boutique stock and preparing for the Bucktown Holiday Market.

That’s a lot of studio time spent on non-custom orders, so get yourself penciled in while you can!

I’m printing out a variety of holiday songs and verses that inspire me.

I’m happy to learn that Love Came Down at Christmas is in the public domain, since I was introduced to it via Jars of Clay. I’ll adorn some angels with that poem by Christina Rossetti.

Last year a friend had me create birthstone angels and frosties with the name of her grandchild and the year the ornament was gifted. Such a fabulous idea.

The colors were specified by grandma based on her family’s preferences.

They also got a note with what each birthstone means.

I can also incorporate logos into a design.

My double-heart frosties sell out each year.

Of course you’re not stuck with angels and snowmen. I have plenty of alternate options available too:

So put your thinking cap on and consider your family’s favorite holiday songs, verses, quotes, colors and aesthetic, and let me know if my ornaments are a match for their tree!

Jigging Frosties

My offline life is speeding up so the online blog is getting off-schedule. Here’s a peek at what pulls me away from the computer these days.

JigWorkSpace

In mid-October I was able to purchase Brenda Schweder’s Now That’s A Jig Starter Kit, which I eagerly anticipated.

JigArrival

I consulted with Brenda via email on the various Rounds she had, and ordered the Big Rounds set for my Frosty the Snowman Holiday Ornaments.

FrostyRounds

I joyfully set up the jig on a sunny day.

JigSetup

Then I dove in with the frosty-making.

JigSmallFrosty

Once I had added an ‘allowance’ for the wire, twisting the strips was easy-peasy.

jiggingwire

Having the option of making various sizes of Frosties is great.

Jigging

It beats using the household mandrels I used last year, and makes the process much faster.

Mandrels

I still do some hand-bending after the base is completed.

bending

Then I heat up the griddle for their adornments.

Griddle

Sometimes a bit of smashing is required to flatten the snowmen out again.

flattening

I tried setting up the jig for trees and angels too but that requires a little more finessing (more pegs in particular).

Productivity is booming for the holiday season!

FrostyProduction

You’ll see my frosties, angels and other holiday ornaments on Etsy, at Aurora Rose Boutique in Lemont, Dragonfly Boutique in Evanston, The Evanston Art Center’s EXPO, the Waukegan West class of 1990 fundraiser and the Bucktown Holiday Fair.

FrostiesJigged

Necklace pendants, earrings and key chains are also in the works.

Christmas Holiday

Today the remaining pieces from the EXPO are coming back home, and then I am taking a holiday break.

Fireplace

While I will be tempted to write up blog posts for the remainder of the year, I am going to allow for time to reflect and not post anything until the new year.

Tree

This will help me close out the year business wise, spend time with family, and also catch up on some travel blog posts in progress that I am looking forward to sharing with you.

“Idleness is not just a vacation, an indulgence or a vice;
it is as indispensable to the brain as vitamin D is to the body,
and deprived of it we suffer a mental affliction as disfiguring as rickets.
The space and quiet that idleness provides is a necessary condition
for standing back from life and seeing it whole,
for making unexpected connections and
waiting for the wild summer lightning strikes of inspiration —
it is, paradoxically, necessary to getting any work done.”
~ Tim Kreider

My Etsy shop is closed for the holiday as well, to eliminate the pressure of not being able to ship right away while I am visiting family. So hold your gift cards til the new year. 😉

I wish you and yours a wonderful Christmas holiday, and a festive, cozy end of 2013.

See you in 2014!

Feeling Ornamental

It’s a bit early for Advent, but I am having a blast caroling and making holiday ornaments for December.

Assortment

Making snowmen has taught me all the lyrics to Frosty the Snowman.

Frosty

Meanwhile angelic songs are humming in my brain as well.

Angels

’Tis the season to be jolly, two months ahead of schedule. Snow arrived early, too, but it will hopefully hold off after last week’s fluke. Technically I should have started Christmas preparations in June, but it’s my first year in retail world so I am still learning the ropes.

Peaceful Parlour was first to light a fire under me when they requested that I bring in ornaments in October. This is the selection I brought in, though some pieces may have already been adopted.

AllPPOrnaments

Located at 212 S. Third Street in Geneva, Illinois, Peaceful Parlour is Chicagoland’s most expansive Eco-Chic Boutique. The future-friendly store carries a wide variety of herbal remedies and offers a numerous hand-blended teas designed to enhance wellness and positive energy. The kid’s playroom offers a variety of earth-friendly, no-batteries-required toys that kids can experiment with while parents peruse the rest of the store.

PeacefulPorch

Peaceful Parlour’s focus is to find products with environmental and community benefits, supporting local artists, small businesses, fair trade and women co-op groups around the world. These products include household items such as recycled-glass water bottles, cork bowls; gardening accessories; personal adornments such as scarves, hats, jewelry and purses; and home decorative items including lamps, paintings and chimes. With its focus on positive energy flow, Peaceful Parlour also offers incense, purifying sprays and other meditative tools.

The woman-owned store hosts a variety of pop-up events, including a psychic medium, meet the artisan, outdoor music in the summer and tie-ins to Geneva’s special holiday festivities. The store will hold hourly ‘Blue Light Specials‘ on Small Business Saturday (November 30).  Geneva’s Christmas Walk and House Tour on Dec 6th and Dec 7th marks the arrival of Santa Lucia  and the mayor is presented with the first candy cane of the season on Friday night. Stores stay open late and Peaceful Parlour will be serving some organic herbal teas and homemade cookies. A guy’s night out is planned on December 17th at which they can shop for their ladies (Peaceful Parlour will have them fill out a wish list in advance).

Parlour

The Evanston Art Center’s Winter EXPO, opening on November 23, will have select pieces on display as well.

EXPOOrnaments

So while I am ambivalent about jumping on the Christmas-before-December retail bandwagon, I do need to sell and promote my wares. So peruse my Holiday collection at Peaceful Parlour in Geneva and at Aurora Rose Boutique in Lemont.

MiniTree

You can order your custom ornaments or pendants via e-mail. This set just got shipped overseas. Overseas orders need to be in by November 20 in order to arrive by Christmas, or they might get stuck in customs until the New Year.

OverseasOrder

I can make angels, snowmen and trees in any color combination, and incorporating the carols you favor. Wire cages get quirky at times, so those will be a blend of your choices and the wire’s personality. Since these will all be made by hand, my last day of taking custom holiday orders is December 9. Local and Etsy orders should be made by December 18 to ensure on-time Christmas delivery.

PPOrnaments

The three pieces below will be up for dibs on Facebook before they go to Etsy (trees may be a one-season-only offer, they’re complicated!):
