I’m curious how this one will turn out. Get a sneak peek of my beaded jewelry on Etsy.

Summer Selfies

It’s time for some Summer Selfies as I process numerous photos from my August travels.

AgateFlowerblog

The Yellow Agate Set visited a few stores this quarter while the pink flower wax and wire pendant was admired during NEW’s recent Meet & Munch. I paired it with infinity earrings.

redselfiesblog

in May I wore various Mother’s Day Pendants to promote the lovely day. The peace-loving squiggledee adorned my seatbelt on an errand run. I sold a zigzag collar and had fun creating a new one. During NEW’s visit to the Heartwood Center I wore the Princess Coleopterist Ladybug pendant.

I’m freelancing again which had me suiting up a few times.

BWSelfiesblog

The black and white look called for the Isaiah 55:12 bible pendant that had me go out in joy. I paired it with spiral earrings. My coiled wire earrings were paired with various outfits throughout the summer. I wore the polka dot pendant inspired by Curly Girl Design’s shipment on another outing. The burgundy abstract pendant isn’t listed yet.

BlueSelfiesBlog

I enjoyed making the Delft blue pendants for my SAIL trip on King’s Day. The Morpho pendant is a favorite of mine. For the pride parade celebration I paired this rainbow pendant with flower earrings that sold. My chunky bead pendants are making their way on Etsy. You can order your own birthstone or chakra bangle anytime, or visit the Collage Cafe for ready-made items.

Come try these on at Saturday’s Platt-A-Polooza event in Bloomingdale.

Where the River Shannon Flows pendants

I got some studio time in recently and decided to add more musical pendants to my inventory (they keep selling out).

blarney

I’ve just about used up the Irish Rose music sheet I received from a friend.  The song is really called: Where the River Shannon Flows.

readyforwax

There’s a pretty spot in Ireland
I always claim for my land
Where the fairies and the blarney will never, never die

IrishRoseScarfie
It’s the land of the shillalah
My heart goes back there daily
To the girl I left behind me when we kissed and said goodbye

I cut some steel wire and hammered it out.

WirePrepping

CHORUS:   Where dear old Shannon’s flowing
Where the three-leaved shamrock’s grows
Where my heart is I am going to my little Irish rose

2IrishHearts
And the moment that I meet her
With a hug and kiss I’ll greet her
For there’s not a colleen sweeter where the River Shannon flows.

RiverShannon

Then I sized and bent the steel around words  I wanted to highlight. This (sold) heart moved around a bit.

fitingfirstheart

I cut the paper with an allowance.

cutting and sizing

Waxing the paper came next.

waxinghug

Then I adhered the waxed paper to the bent wire.

adheringtosteel

Trimming the pendant came next, along with an extra round of encaustic medium to keep it all together.

trimmingmusicalpendants

It’s nice to realize the three pendants I made from this sheet before have all sold. The round hug is up on Etsy now.

lyricdetailsBlog

You’ll see the final four appear on Etsy in September and at local pop-up shows.

EtsyLoad

Sure no letter I’ll be mailing
For soon will I be sailing
And I’ll bless the ship that takes me to my dear old Erin’s shore

lyricsandheart
There I’ll settle down forever
I’ll leave the old sod never
And I’ll whisper to my sweetheart “Come and take my name Asthore.”

I Googled the snippets of lyrics and found the full song on YouTube:

Love Delivered Inspiration

At Christmas Santa gifted me with a subscription to Curly Girl Design’s Love Delivered.

LoveDelivered0

Each quarter, the wonderful people at Curly Girl Design pack up their latest releases, boxed sets of cards and other odds and ends to cheer the recipient up.

Lovedeliveredfirst

Then the job becomes figuring out whom to send these pearls of wisdom to.

LoveDelivered1

The list of recipients is almost completed, but the writing of the cards is still to be done.

LoveDelivered2Cards

My aim is to take some of my electronic hiatus weekend days to sit down with pen and paper and write (scribble) someone a personal note. Handwritten notes are so unusual these days, and I’ve relied too much on electronic (group) correspondence the past few years.

CurlyGirlDesignPencilsBlog

The third installment had festive polkadot tissue paper with a fabulous sticker on it.

LoveDeliveredPolkaDots

It was begging to be converted into a pendant.

PerfectFrenchSticker

I pasted some of the tissue paper on the back of the pendant to even out the stickiness, and then twisted wire into a circle to go around the sticker shape.

PerfectFrenchMaking

I used a piece of Brenda Schweder’s Now That’s a Jig to form a polkadot pendant and made spirals emulating the happy dots.

Polkadotpendant

After some shaping and bending I waxed the paper and added it on to the wire with black encaustic paint.

PolkaDotPendantComplete

These pendants will make their way to Etsy this week, so someone who does dream in perfect French can snap it up. I used to dream in Dutch, then German, but now it is mostly English.

Check out Leigh Standley’s amazing wisdom and quirky collage designs.

I’ve had her calendar two years in a row, and was fortunate to listen to her share her journey at the Creative Connection Event when I first responded to the tinglings of embarking on a creative life.

It is fun to be encouraged to “live imperfectly with great delight.”

Dutch vibe on King’s Day

Yesterday was Koningsdag or King’s Day in the Netherlands. After celebrating Queen Juliana’s Birthday on April 30 for 36 years, we are now honoring King Willem Alexander on his birthday.

PolkadotBoat

Two of my globe-trotting friends have been posting photos of Delft and its porcelain and the Keukenhof’s gorgeous tulip splendor this week so I am definitely feeling a Dutch vibe. My fellow Dutchies posted their Oranje festivities which made me feel connected.

WaxView

My nostalgia found a channel with a Delft Blue napkin I had been holding on to for a while. It reflects quintessential Dutch imagery often found on pottery.

DelftNapkin

The little girl is holding buckets, reminiscent of a childhood song.

TweeEmmertjesWater

Blue is prominent in my life, and Delftware has created an affinity to cobalt blue in particular.

ironing

My blue coat is finally back in rotation after wearing goose down for much too long.

Trimming

I’ve also added some highlights to my hair for fun, which actually go well with my safety mask.

Boats are making their way back into Lake Michigan harbors. SAIL Amsterdam, a fantastic boat exhibit similar to the Chicago Air and Water show (sans air), will be held this summer.

Sail2015

I’m still working on a Winkeljuffrouw pendant that is not aligning properly in my printer. The original print turns out to be a bit too large for a necklace, and shrinking onto a double-sided print is proving to be harder than it should be.

WinkelJuffrouwAttempts

Persistence will win out over this though.

More Mother’s Day pendants are going up on Etsy this week to round out the collection.

multilingualMom

I’m enjoying the different color combinations and had to remake a lime green version that got snapped up at RAW Chicago.

MomDayKingDayblog

Let me know what other combinations and shapes you would like to see.

The windmill is already on Etsy and the other two will make their way online next week if no one claims them via Facebook.

March flowers

We keep getting more snow but it is springtime in the studio.

MarchSnow

I received a gift in this vibrant floral tissue paper and couldn’t resist making some cheerful pendants with them.

tissuepaperinspiration

A simple oval was the obvious choice, but then it was fun playing with petal shapes too.

OvalPinkFlower

I pulled out Brenda Schweder’s Now That’s A Jig to practice more form-making.

NowThatsAJig2

When the wire shapes are completed I cut out the papers to match each form.

cuttingpetals

After dipping the paper in wax each petal is painstakingly aligned with the wire, and fused to its rightful place with a quilting iron.

Petalingsteps

A yellow scrap made me want to add another flower to my blend.

I shall call it Potentilla erecta. Buttercups might have to be next!

I’ve been loading more pendants and earrings to Etsy the past week.

These newbies will be processed for new listings soon, but you can always contact me to call dibs! I post combos and works in progress on my Instagram feed as well.

Post-Fair Gratitude

Well my holiday fairs are over and I am so flattered and honored at the reactions my pieces garnered.

1_SetupTeardown

It is lovely to be complimented on my wire-bending skills, and to have people purchase pieces to give to their loved ones.

1_ADASales

Knowing the quotes and songs touch people’s hearts and have meaning to them makes my day, and validates the creation of each piece. I am honored that you shared your moments and intentions with me.

1_LibertyvilleSales

The exertion of hauling bags from one place to the next does come with a weakened immune system, so now I am resting up before planning the coming year.

1_PackingLuggingShipping

Thank you to everyone who came buy to each of these fairs to support local artists and shop handmade pieces.

1_4booths5days

Without you, the pursuit of our passion wouldn’t be possible, and it is great to see that Chicago has a vibrant community of shoppers who seek out local and small business venues over ordering online from big-box manufacturers.

1_BTday2Pendants

Thank you for supporting me personally, and for giving my pendants, earrings, bangles, necklaces, ornaments and desktop minis new homes.

1_BT_Day2Ornaments

The more you collect the more I can make, and that is what brings my heart joy.

You can still peruse my wares at the Evanston Art Center’s Holiday EXPO and Dragonfly Boutique in Evanston, at Aurora Rose Boutique in Lemont, and on Etsy.

New pendants for dibs

I made a few new pendants this month that I almost do not want to part with.

PendantsLine

The studio has been shiny and bright, luring me in.

pendantmaking

Someone posted Isaiah 55:12 in a piece of their work, so I went to my art Bible and ripped that page out for a pendant.

JoyStepByStep4

Don’t you love its message?

Isaiah5512

May it bring much joy to its future wearer.

JoyPendantFrontBack4

Meanwhile, Iggy Azalea’s ear worm was in my head, so I took a piece of Hello Holiday tissue paper and stamped its theme onto the paper (but not quite out of my head).

FancyPendant

I was also feeling the need to create an empowerment talisman with royal purple.

PendantWIP4

American Authors’ song reminds me to live each day to the fullest this year, so I wrote their lyrics out too.

EpiphaniesFrontBack4

For the Evanston Art Center’s 12th Annual Winter Arts & Crafts EXPO I created a green pendant, which will debut there November 22.

GreenEXPOPendant

For their Men’s Shopping Day: Saturday, December 20 from 10am to 4 pm I also made a keychain (though I think they’re supposed to get help shopping for the leading ladies in their lives).

GoldKeyChainEXPO

Turning the clock back has me feeling like I am chasing daylight as the sun sets sooner.

chasingdaylight

I also used some scraps to create mini pendants.

PurpleVibeSmall

Clearly purple is vibing with me these days.

PurpleSwirlPendant

I’ve also got a few more earrings in my head that will hopefully come out of my hands soon.

earrings

I have not loaded these on Etsy yet but you can message me via Facebook for your selection or special order. Holiday pendants are coming too.

ReignethPendant

Lots of ornaments are in the works and some will float around Chicagoland next month. Etsy will gradually update between holiday fairs.

Angelworks

If you like to shop in person, you can peruse The ADA Holiday Fair downtown on December 5, the Waukegan West class of 1990 fundraiser December 6, and the Bucktown Holiday Fair December 13 & 14.

Maike’s Maraviglia out and about

I’ve been enjoying the weather and nature so much that promoting my jewelry has been backburnered a bit. But you’ll see me wear and can peruse fun pieces at NEW’s Crain’s Small Business Week Event on Wednesday. My Chakra Bangle and Twinsy Dancing Spirals are with me most often.

ChakraBangle

The Morpho Butterfly wax and wire pendant is looking forward to fluttering into someone else’s home.

MorphoPendant

This baby blue beaded collar set from the Bead & Button Show will pop up on Etsy after the Ravenswood ArtWalk. I’m eager to make more with my newly acquired beads.

BlueBeadsSet

With October marking the last quarter of the year, it is also time to start thinking about Holiday orders. Musical pieces like Christmas Carols on ornaments are popuplar.

ViolinClefEarrings

My German deliveries tend to take a full month through customs, so I will need to ship those off by mid-November. So if you live overseas, message me now with Holiday gift ideas and I will work them into the studio schedule. I’ll be infinitely grateful for the early notice. This infinity rainbow collar and the coiled earrings make me happy every day.

InfinityCoils

Collars and Earrings can be custom sized. The Curled Collar and ovalish earrings made a trip to REI with me. I’m loving Dragonfly Collections‘ plum sweater for fall.

CurledCollarOvals

The blue Crystal wax and wire pendant garners much admiration when I wear it out.

BlueSparklePendant

And on my visit to the Bahá’í House of Worship for North America the Waves Earrings came along for some beachy time.

WavesAmongWaves

Come try these on in person at Meet, Munch & Mastermind at Shannon’s Irish Pub, 428 North Main St, Glen Ellyn, IL from 1- 6 on Wednesday, October 8.
