Seussian Studiotime

I’ve done a lot of uploading and tweaking wordpress for the shop, and while I have plenty of pieces in stock, I was itching to get back into the studio again.

This brush needed to be taken out of its misery too!

My rainbow collection garnered a custom Valentine order, which I cheerfully fulfilled.

These are off to new homes.

I also recreated the infinity pendant that came out of a Now That’s a Jig! playdate.

My original version was snapped up right away, so here is this brighter pendant.

A bangle I created last year turned out to be too small, and then my customer asked to have it embellished with birthstone beads to represent her family.

So I set out to Dave’s Rock Shop and Ayla’s Originals to get the right gemstones.

The bigger size bangle called for a new mandrel.

Then I layed out the stones.

Stringing took a full afternoon, as most of these tiered bangles do.

I love the look of them though.

I donated a few keychains to worthy causes.

Some will pop up in various fundraisers throughout the year.

I also made a Seuss-inspired pendant for Chiaravalle Montessori School’s “Oh The Places You’ll Go”-themed Spring Benefit.

Dr. Seuss is one of my favorite authors and I own his full collection, including the Dutch books I grew up with. So I wiggled together a whimsical wire form to reflect the Seussian landscape.

I took a cue from “Oh the Places You’ll Go” and drew some lines in the pastel colors of the book onto tissue paper. Of course there had to be a nod to the message of the book on the back.

Now my spirit is restored and I can get back to the mundaner tasks of business management and planning. I multitask during product uploads, and ponder the places my business will go.

Trunk Show Sparkles

The last day of April was marred by rain, but that did not deter shoppers from browsing See Jane Sparkle and my Trunk Show.

AudreyTable

I set up for the show in the morning, and dropped of more yarn bomb doilies next door, where drawing angel hung out for the day to support Stumble & Relish’s guest artist.

It was fun to play with social media throughout the day.

My traveling angel almost got snapped up, but then she was recognized and her friend went to a new home instead.

Jaime of Stumble & Relish wore her new pyrite pendant out the door.

In the afternoon, several people perused my wares, and adopted some pieces.

I had made lots of sparkly pieces for See Jane Sparkle, and she consigned the new collection.

Exclusively for her I made some single-dangle bangles.

More musical pendants

My violin clef pendants are a best-seller, and I need to replenish my inventory on a regular basis.

handful

See Jane Sparkle has a bass clef pendant in stock, but I need to swing by there to add more violin clefs for a friend.

BassClefatSJS

I sold a musical pendant at Moon Art Gallery as well.

So I sat down and made some more.

collaging clefs

A friend had gifted me with vintage music books, and one page has a song about a Shepherd-boy.

It turns out to be a poem by Thomas Moore, but there seems to be no musical piece online that I could find. Google has the poem in The Poetical Works of Thomas Moore.

It’s fun to refresh my musical vocabulary as my flute is gathering patina. Subito means “quickly, suddenly” and Simile means “in the same way” .

Some pendants don’t quite turn out for the purpose I intended, but then they get re-bended into a new piece.

MusicalReject

I liked a page on whole notes from the Robyn-Hanks Keyboard Primer and placed those in pendants. It also had a section about major scales I’ll be pulling from more.

I also play with earrings and bangles and not-so-literal shapes.

Some think my Chakra and birthstone bangles have a musical feel to them as well.

You’ll see these at the Ladies Who Lunch fundraiser on Sunday, and the April 30 pop-up at See Jane Sparkle. I’ll be sure to get some to The Collage Cafe and Moon Art Gallery by May as well.

Artists Challenge

Last month a Facebook Artists’ Challenge made its rounds and it was an interesting way to narrow down my art into categories. I posted hearts on day one since Valentine’s Day was nigh. For that day I nominated Lisa Wilson of Being Breath, an artist and life-balancer I met during Shawna Moore’s encaustic workshop.

543_Hearts-Lisa Wilson

With the challenge you had to post three pieces of art each day for 5 days, and nominate a new artist with each of those posts. Rory Coyne and Lauren Levato Coyne were hosting a gathering at their new Sidetracked Studio so I linked back to their pages the next day. Since Lauren and I met through butterfly obsession, posting encaustic collages of my favorite creatures made sense. Their next show “What did she say?” opens on March 7.

543_Collages-Coynes-Dragonfly

Day three was dedicated to Crystal Neubauer, who introduced me to wax and wire. She operates Healing House Artists Studio where I look forward to taking art workshops this summer. Since her color palette is in earth tones, I posted my musical pieces that day.

543_Musical-Crystal

As the newly elected co-President of FUSEDChicago I had to give a shout-out to our midwest encaustic artists group, which I did on Day 4 with my jewelry for mothers, including custom birthstone pendants and bangles and newborn customized pendants.

543_Birthstones-FUSED

The last day was dedicated to Brenda Schweder, who helped me wrangle bangles before regular wire-working was even on my radar. I am looking forward to using her Now That’s A Jig for more pieces.

543_Sets-Schweder-Jig

I’m working on some branding exercises to narrow down my style and how to describe it. This challenge was a good exercise to pick out my favorites jewelry pieces.

Pendants of the Summer

I haven’t been taking many jewelry selfies lately, though I always get compliments on the Maraviglia I am wearing.

peace

Earlier this summer I wore Blessed are you among Women out paired with my favorite twinsy spirals.

Blessed

At NEW’s anniversary party I wore my bangles, which pretty much go with all my outfits and can be custom-ordered.

The Make by Megan K. dress was combined with my Amazonite collar and swirly pearls at my trunk show.

Aurora Rose has a set for sale, which you can view here:

At other NEW events I wore Orange You Dancing with Smashed Earrings and a brown version of this green wax and wire triangle along with another set of abstract earrings.

NEWpendants

On a sunny day I adorned my lace sundress with a wax and wire butterfly and the smashed earrings.

The other day I opted for just earrings and no necklace with this purple wire-wrapped pair that hasn’t been listed yet.

I felt the need for some inner peace one day and paired blue scribble ball earrings with this wax and wire peace symbol pendant. In the background is the jellyfish lamp from Peaceful Parlour.

I wore the lace dress to Evanston’s Lakeshore Art Fest with a caged feather butterfly similar to this one and added the pink scribble ball earrings.

Summer Jewelry on Etsy

Before my 3-day escape last week I did a photoshoot for Etsy. This week I loaded more inventory onto the shop, as I explore other venues to display and sell my work.

Draw was inspired by the fabulous pencil handler Lauren Levato-Coyne. She taught me how to draw, and her friendship has drawn me into Chicago’s artistic community.

My birthstone pieces found their start with this Turquoise set. Turquoise has lovely healing properties.

Years ago I made a watch from cubed beads, and the remaining beads became part of this ‘cubist’ pendant. It reminds me of Alicia Forestall-Boehm’s work.

The Sunshine sparkle beaded bangle with matching earrings cheers me up. I want to wear it but designed it for someone taller than me. Is it you?

YellowSparkleBangleEarringSet

This is blue wax and wire rectangle is one of my favorites, with a vintage glass bead from a chandelier that I only find in plastic these days.

I’ve had these pink tulip beads for some time as well, and hope they find their way to a new home soon.

Earrings abound as well, with these heart-shaped cages being the most recent internet debutantes.

CagedHeartearrings

Wouldn’t the pink scribble ball earrings go well with this Pretty in Pink oval pendant?

Practicing the art of Selfies

Recently an article made the rounds that taking selfies is an indicator of narcissism, which made ponder my Pendants of the Day shoots.  Incidentally, as I typed ‘selfies’ my spell checker changed it to ‘selfless’, irony upon irony.

InfinityRaibowSelfies

Infinite Rainbow Collar

I will cop to having a slight Facebook addiction, but that is also the primary means of communication with my overseas family. However, my intent with taking pictures of my Maraviglia is to show how they wear on a person in regular outings, not to plaster my face all over your screen.

PinkButterfly

Pink and Gold Butterfly wax and wire pendant with Swirly Pearls Earrings

It does take practice to get the right angle from arm’s length, and I am learning much about lighting, background, facial expressions and chin-posture as I shoot and reshoot my neck and shoulders. The intent is to focus on the jewelry though, and hopefully eventually I can have friends model them so different complexions and body types are represented.

ContactSheetSelfiesAngles
Meconopsis with Double Spiral Earrings

So these are the pieces I wore out and about in the past month. My brother snapped me getting instructions from my other brother during an outing at which I wore a polkadot heart pendant with smashed abstract earrings.

I fully understand the compulsion in this media age to check likes and views and do occasionally question my ability to conjure up a fan base when compared to the artists I aspire to emulate. I was a wallflower in my youth, so seeing a numerical value to how many friends your peers have via social media must cause some pressure when you are still defining who you are.

The Spiral Collar visited Symphony’s with NEW
and also complimented my green floral dress.

Here’s to balance in all aspects of life, and using social media in moderation, without sacrificing other forms of socializing and quiet contemplation.

Mother’s Day Gift Ideas

Mother’s Day is nigh (May 11 in the U.S., Netherlands and Germany) and I am taking custom orders.

MomDayBangles1

I’ve had a few requests for birthstone jewelry, and now is the time to message me if this is something you would like to honor your mother with. Based on your family members’ birth dates I will select semiprecious stones associated with their birth month and incorporate them into a bangle or a pendant.

I’ve also created custom wax and wire pendants with family member names, the meaning of a child’s name, favorite quotes while incorporating a favorite color or shape. Ready-made hearts are here.
